VPC has received the following query from Allison Smith, 4-H Youth Learning Experiences Coordinator at UVM Extension:
Hello,
I am writing to the Vermont Paddlers Club in our shared interest and appreciation of outdoor recreation. Each year, Outdoor Family Weekend offers families in Vermont an opportunity to learn about and enjoy the outdoors. Our 23rd Outdoor Family Weekend will be held on September 11-13 at Stillwater Park in Groton, Vermont.
I am seeking individuals who would be interested in instructing some flat water canoeing on Lake Groton for participants. VT State Parks offers their canoe fleet for participant use. Historically we have tried to offer at least two workshops that help get families out on the water and teach them the basics of paddling and canoe safety. Other topics have also included: canoe camping and canoe rescues.
More details on joining us as an instructor: Instructors teach 2-hour workshops, in subjects of their choice, offering the basics & providing hands-on experience in exchange for complimentary partial- or full-family registration to the event. If you or any members of the Vermont Paddlers Club would like to be a part of this special weekend as an instructor and nurture the next generation of youth’s enjoyment of the outdoors, please reach out to me as I would be happy to discuss and answer any questions.
This program is a joint effort by the UVM Extension 4-H Program and the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources' Departments of Fish and Wildlife and Forests, Parks and Recreation to promote, address, and instill in the public a basic understanding of environmental conservation, safety, and fun in the outdoors.
Thank you for considering participating in this event!
— Allison
