Some weeks ago, Jamaica State Park said on its home page that a fall release was unlikely but not officially cancelled:
In addition, the US Army Corps of Engineers has informed us that it is unlikely that a scheduled water release will be held the last weekend of September due to complications with a maintenance problem at the Ball Mountain Dam. Should a water release be possible, there would not be a vehicle shuttle or vendors at the state park this year.
Today I noticed a September 9 post on the USACE Facebook page that said the release is cancelled. A check of the real-time data page for Ball Mountain Dam shows a pool level of 33.5 feet, which is slightly below the normal winter level, i.e., the target level for a fall draw-down. So there is really no way they can do a release, unless we get a ton of rain in the next few days. That is definitely not in the cards.
That said, Jamaica State Park is a beautiful place for a weekend getaway — hiking, biking, and hanging out. However, be prepared for a couple of chilly fall days next weekend, with daytime highs about 60 F and nights in the 30s.
