See this trip report, devoted mainly to capturing the weekend's flows for posterity. (I'm not sure how long the details will be accessible on the USGS site.)

For now, I did a cursory job on other elements of the report. I'll follow up later. Feel free to offer suggestions.

This Patagonia-produced film is being released on June 6.
    See the trailer here.

It examines the ongoing debate and rethinking concerning dam removal across the country.

There are screenings on June 5 at Patagonia Burlington on Bank Street (close to Church Street) on June 26 at Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield.
These screenings are sponsored by the Vermont Natural Resources Council (VNRC.org).

Re: VPC Website Modernization - Phase I
    930
On March 8th the VPC website switched to a more modern and dramatically faster database engine. That's the good news. The bad news is, there may be pages on the website where things you post will fail to post. If you are reading this post, then the message boards are working as expected. Please be on the lookout for pages that bonk, and (by all means) give me a shout! Phase II of the modernization will come in another month or two, with many new features and a complete facelift.

Re: New York Whitewater Parks Underway
    901
    By: Chris
See this news item from Rapid Media (1 Nov 2013):
New York paddlers could see some new whitewater flowing through town—three-time Olympic paddler Scott Shipley is working on plans for urban whitewater parks in the communities of Potsdam, Canton and Colton. The new park will have three sites, says Fred Hass, director of Planning and Development in Potsdam. An expert-level run down the Raquette River’s Stone Valley section, a play park and an area of beginner to intermediate level whitewater. Shipley’s company, S2O Designs, is behind major parks like The National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC and the Olympic whitewater venue in London, England. He’s drawing on his extensive experience in the worlds of whitewater and engineering to plan a park that will draw as many paddlers as possible to the region.

As a service to our members, Paddle America Clubs and event organizers, the ACA now has an online waiver system. ACA members can also log in and complete a waiver online:
All Paddle America Club (PAC) members must provide the ACA with a new signed waiver every year with your membership renewal in order to meet the insurance requirements for the ACA and your club.

    902
Howdy Folks, Can't believe it's already been 2 years since the last board election. Time flies when you are having fun! That said we've set a date, location and time for the meeting/potluck. Mark your calendars for December 8th, 6:00 - 9:00 pm at the Williston Federated Church. We'll have Nick Gottlieb as our keynote speaker, providing a show on his trip this past year to South America to get on some southern hemisphere classics and lesser known runs, as well as his experience with the Whitewater Grand Prix. It should be a great show! Also, stay tuned for our up-and-coming latest edition of the Bow and Stern. It should be a good one. Also keep an eye out for a postcard about the December 8th meeting. It will have details about the breakdown for food responsibilities for the Potluck.... Cheers, Ryan

If you're interested in seeing what serious (albeit class 2) whitewater slalom is like, the Fiddlehead Slalom is being held on the Winooski in Montpelier on Sunday , May 12 (Power Plant Road, just off Gallison Hill Road on the east side of town). Saturday is devoted to practice runs, registration, and setup. Many participants are arriving today [Friday, May 10], and most will be camping along the river. This section is very continuous solid class 2 with a lot of features, and some class 3 whitewater upstream of the race course (where the slalom gates are).

The session is less than 6 days away. See the Pool Session Signup Page. The session starts at 7:00 pm and runs until 9:00 pm. If you haven't paddled a river yet this year, or have paddled but found that your roll needs a tuneup, here's a great chance to do it in warm water! This is a special session for paddlers in the Barre/Montpelier/Waterbury area, being held at First in Fitness Aquatic Center, just off Route 62. (Take I-89 Exit 7.)

    Monday, March 18 / 7-9 pm / $5
The Black Box Theater at Main Street Landing
Justine is an award winning adventure filmmaker, expedition sea kayaker and creator of the most exciting sea kayaking movies ever. She uses a specially developed camera-mount to capture sea kayaking in the most exciting (and scary) conditions. Her entertaining DVDs, This is the Sea 1, 2, 3, 4 and releasing this month, 5, have inspired thousands of people to take to the water. Justine has been on challenging expeditions around the globe, including circumnavigating the south island of New Zealand, Tasmania and the Queen Charlotte islands, a solo trip around Iceland's West Fjords, a crossing of the Bass Strait and a wilderness journey in Kamchatka with a novice Russian kayaker. She represented England in the world surf kayak championships and loves surfing her kayak in the tidal races near her home in Wales. Her adventure documentaries have been shown on the BBC and National Geographic Channel and won her an award at the prestigious Banff Mountain Film Festival. From the bio on her website:
Always looking for a new challenge and with an ‘anything is possible’ attitude, in 2009 Justine took up open boating and is now making the first modern canoeing DVD showcasing the different aspects of the sport and featuring many top names, beautiful wilderness journeys and exciting whitewater. In the process, she paddled 370km down Canada’s remote Mountain river, crossed Rannoch Moor in Scotland, paddled down Algonquins Petawawa river & learnt what it is like to pin a canoe on a challenging rapid!

WIth the lack of water this summer, here's a little something to help you plan a paddle trip even if Mother Nature doesn't have our best interests in mind! Please double check all release levels, times and river ratings before attempting any of these rivers to be sure they are within your ability level, and if they're actually happening. If you'd like to lead a trip for one of the releases mentioned below, please get in touch with Chris Weed to set up a trip date. FALL WHITEWATER RELEASE SCHEDULE (

Re: VPC CLASS II CLINIC, July 14-15 !!!
    846
See the information page (on website sidebar). Here is a brief introduction: This two day clinic will build upon the strokes and concepts learned in the Novice Clinic. This clinic is also suitable for anyone with at least two days of whitewater instruction. You should be able to demonstrate (at a minimum): wet exits, good balance, basic strokes, paddling in a straight line, controlled turns, self rescue, ferry, peelouts, and eddy turns. You do not need to be proficient in these skills, but you should be comfortable enough to put them to use in Class 2 water. You will need to have your own equipment, or make arrangements prior to the clinic to obtain club equipment. You must have at a minimum: a USCG approved PFD, a whitewater specific helmet, sprayskirt (kayaks), paddle, and a boat. Flotation for your boat is highly recommended and will keep your rescuers happy.

A few words about the 'meta-fields' in the 'news' table are in order, especially the 'msg_type', 'handled', 'expiry', and 'persistence' fields. Here is how we want these 4 fields to inter-relate..
  1. Setting a reasonable expiry datetime stamp is good practice. It defaults to '0000-00-00 00:00:00'. If you leave it as is, the message will be treated as permanent/persistent. With one notable exception, each time the VPCNews editor page is opened, the page will take note of any messages found to possess a stale/expired expiry (datetime value), and will reclassify them as 'Expired' (msg_type).
  2. Here's the exception to 1) above. This action is blocked if the persistence flag is set to 'Yes', so set this flag for any 'sticky' messages that you want to hang around past their expiry date. The persistence flag defaults to 'No'.
  3. The 'Sunset' flag is a convenience. It defaults to 'No'. If set to 'Yes', then at the completion of a publish/send operation all messages so flagged will be reclassified as 'Expired'. NB: this action ignores/trumps the persisence flag, so only set it to 'Yes' when you know the message is poised to sunset.
  4. Once a message is categorized as 'Expired', it will NO LONGER BE SENT, and it will STOP ARREARING in the 'Arrange' tab in the VPCNews editor. In this sense, expiring a message is immediate and irrevocable. It trumps the expiry datetime as well as the persistence flag.
  5. Expired messages are not programmatically deleted from the news table in the database. Instead, we permit them to persist there in perpetuity. Notify the webmaster if you accidentally expire a message and wish to have it restored. As of 2015-03-09, there are close to 1000 individual messages in the news table, all told (most of them expired).
